Review of Martinhal Sagres Resort Portugal

By Marie-Claire McGlade

If you are looking for a truly family friendly European beach resort which combines the flexibility of having your own villa with all the advantages of hotel service, then Martinhal Sagres will definitely tick all the boxes. My husband and I spent a week at the gorgeous resort with our two year old son and we can truly say it was one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had since having children!

We flew into Faro airport which is just under a three hour flight from London and we were met at the airport by a friendly taxi driver arranged by the hotel who already had the correct size car seat fitted so that was a huge bonus point at the outset! Transfer time to the resort is just under one hour.

The resort is set in a gorgeous nature reserve adjoining a beautiful sandy beach and the hotel and villa buildings have been tastefully designed to blend in with their stunning scenery. We booked a two bedroom villa which was extremely spacious and thoughtfully designed, with a fully equipped kitchen with an all important dishwasher and all the baby and toddler equipment you could possibly need came as standard. For us, renting a villa in the grounds rather than staying in the main hotel gave us a lot of extra space and the flexibility to eat “at home” when it suited us and our son. In addition having a daily cleaning service in the villa was bliss! Over the course of the week we probably split our time 50/50 between self catering and dining at one of the hotel’s three restaurants. The fine dining restaurant O Terraco has a stunning terrace. There is also a great seafood restaurant and an Italian restaurant which also has a convenient take away service. The well stocked deli and grocery store stocks everything from nappies to traditional Portuguese snacks and savouries and an excellent range of local wines.

We tended to spend mornings on the beach before heading out for lunch and once our son was safely settled down for his afternoon nap we could enjoy some much needed sun lounger time in the garden or on the balcony. We often headed to one of the five pools (one indoor) in the late afternoon.

We used the excellent English speaking kids club a couple of time during the week and our son loved it. Initially we were a little anxious about leaving him but he soon settled in and enjoyed the various activities during his two hour sessions including a nature trail that were arranged for him. We were able to enjoy a proper swim and late breakfast one morning and another afternoon we enjoyed a long leisurely lunch which would otherwise be impossible with a two year old in tow! I even managed a manicure one afternoon at the amazing spa!

Children’s entertainment is provided at breakfast and dinner time in their own dining room adjacent to the main dining room which allows parents to have a much-needed meal in peace! All the restaurants have children’s menus and an attached play area, truly the stuff of every parent’s dreams! We have many fond memories of enjoying a glass of the local wine in the early evening while our son played happily beside the bar in the playhouse.

All in all we cannot recommend Martinhal highly enough to families for a magical holiday. The owners have really thought of everything a family could need and the hotel/villa combination allows for a huge amount of flexibility to suit all requirements.

Note: Martinhal have now opened 3 further family hotels and resorts in Portugal, one in Cascais on the Lisbon coast, another in the Quinta do Lago resort and a hotel in Lisbon city centre.
